The software compacts PST file items like emails, contacts, notes, attachments, tasks, journals etc & hence saves it from corruption. The next step would be to create a new PST, and move all folders to it, one by one. If the 50 GB can handle a year's worth, every march I'd archive the previous year's messages to a new pst file. The whole point of Deleted Items is as a safety net; a way to recover from "oops, I didn't mean to delete that" because things aren't really deleted.
